SSM & Turkish Defence Industry visit Australia
Following visits by EDA officers to Turkey in 2008 and 2009, EDA Projects hosted a delegation of senior officials from SSM Turkey (equivalent to the Australian DMO) and representatives from several major Turkish Defence companies in a landmark visit to Australia in June/July 2009. The prime purpose of the visit was to present Turkish Defence industry capabilities to Australian Defence & industry at the DMO “D & I Conference & Exhibition” held in Adelaide. Whilst here the delegation met with State Government and Australian Defence Industry representatives in Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne & Adelaide. Behind the scenes, DMO and SSM officers have been working for several years to establish a Defence cooperation agreement between our two defence procurement organisations and this visit was in support of that effort.
At the D & I Exhibition they met with senior DMO Executives including Defence Exports and Dr Steven Gumley for fruitful discussions. This was the first visit by SSM officers to Australia and they left with very good impressions commenting particularly of the cosmopolitan nature of our cities and organisations. The Turkish stand at the D & I exhibition was particularly striking; especially as it formed a colourful & significant part of the backdrop to the stage at the Conference dinner.
Australia / Turkey Agreement
As mentioned above, DMO & SSM staff have been working for several years on an agreement between the two countries defence procurement organisations. EDA Projects Pty Ltd was formed in 2007 at the request by the Turkish Ambassador H.E. Mr Murat Ersavci to Mr Ali Kahveci (owner of Grand Foods Pty Ltd, winner of the 2007 Victorian Small Business Champion Awards for Wholesale Business) to establish a company to promote defence industry business between Turkey & Australia. Latest advice from the DMO and the Turkish Defence Attache Colonel Ali Kocer is that the “Defence Materiel Cooperation Agreement” is ready for signature and is to be signed in Turkey this 2010 ANZAC Day. This Agreement is necessary for Defence trade between our two countries and will be the basis for particular project and security agreements. We congratulate DMO and SSM staff for continuing to progress this agreement thru the translation difficulties. Thanks must also go to the Turkish Ambassador H.E. Mr Murat Ersavci, the Turkish Defence Attache Colonel Ali Kocer and his predecessor Colonel Memduh Hakbilen for their foresight and assistance in progressing the agreement.
Turkish opportunities for Australian defence industry

SSM Turkey is soliciting responses from Australian industry for equipments for their TF2000 Anti-Air Warfare Frigate program. This is the first time that SSM has approached Australian defence industry and is obviously done in anticipation of the “Materiel Cooperation Agreement” being signed this coming ANZAC Day.
